Estimated 100% Returns: Civil Rights for Downtrodden Citizens

Description Of Legal Dispute

I am seeking a lawyer or legal assistant to help me with my current civil case.

So many citizens of New York City, of whom I am now one after the closure of my workplace, are reliant upon government programs to assist us during times. My boss, who would be losing his position as well, was gracious enough to inform me in advance of the company’s slated plans. January 29th, 2016 was our last official day of work.

Since then, I am one of the many people in this city who have little or no income. My EBT card, which has already been approved weeks ago AND supposedly “expedited”, has failed to arrive in over three weeks now. Had I not been proactive in applying for credit and managing my funds, I would have been starving. My entire first case was canceled when they didn’t receive some documents by their due date, even though I received their mailed letters very late. I was not informed that there was no need to spend hours uploading the needed documents, even though the helpline confirmed their presence. (As a result, my total benefit amount has been slashed due to the later processing.) Some of the interview letters arrived days after the scheduled interview date/time!! In this 2nd case, the scheduled interview call did not come through at all, and I had to call them back myself so my case wouldn’t be denied. Consequently, I have waited for over a month now for food stamps, and of course I have been spending my own money on food when I was already approved.

I have called and emailed the offices about this. HRA often redirects to the local office, the local office does not pick up calls regardless of the time called, and the email responses suggest calling the local office. After telling a person on the phone from one of the departments that the local office never picks up, the response was that “well, then they don’t pick up.” It’s an endless circle, and I don’t have the extra funds to travel the distance to the office to demand documents they might not have.

For all these setbacks, I have been a successful and established worker since I graduated college with a BS at the top of my class (2014 Department Award medal in IT, by staff vote), and my longtime internship had become my immediate job after graduation. However, the economic situation has been hard on everyone, and as someone without the option of relying on parents (they live in Arizona), whose grandparents rely on their help at times, it’s been stressful and sleepless. It’s been nothing but humiliating and demoralizing to be treated as disposable and with absolutely no support for something as basic as food, when I had been doing my part as a diligent student and employee. I am asking at minimum for my card and some additional compensation to cover the weeks that I should have been receiving benefits. However, what I would truly like to see in the future, would be a precedent and a beginning to policies that hold NYC government employees personally accountable, and the fair remedial distribution of benefits to everyone in this city who is being kept without their rightful benefits. I understand that other states have successfully launched class-action lawsuits for specifically this issue.
