A family is facing a daily fine of up to $250,000 because of so-called costly Christmas decorations.

In Plantation, Florida, the city is threatening a family to pay an excessive fine in order to put an end to what is thought to be an “expensive” tradition for the city.
It’s that time of the year again and when joy and excitement should be at the rendez-vous, a family is facing a rather unjust ordeal. The town hall is asking them to take their fancy Christmas decorations down, supposedly because they generate additional costs to the community.
Each year, the Hyatt family installs around 240,000 lights and hundreds of Christmas decorations on their house during one month. Thus, it attracts many families and visitors. Shockingly, the town filed a complaint against the Hyatt family on the grounds that the attraction creates traffic jam and thus generates costs due to the dispatch of further police officers in order to regulate traffic.
The fight with the authorities has been lasting for years while the Hyatt family considers to have the right to do anything they want on their property. They risk a fine of up to $250,000 per day, a lawsuit and also the closing of the roads leading to their house.
According to legal documents:
“The nature and size of Hyatt Extreme Christmas renders it incompatible with the limited access, single family residential neighborhood in which it is located”
Whereas Mark Hyatt considers the complaint to be pointless and puzzling:
“I really don’t think that the thousands and thousands of dollars that the city has spent to keep people from enjoying a tradition, just doesn’t make any sense to me […] it’s our gift back to the community”
The family is petitioning on the Internet to save their Christmas lights and is seeking donations to cover their legal fees.
What a pity that such determination from the city of Plantation would eventually kill an entire community’s Christmas spirit!
You can join the Hyatt family in their fight to save their “Extreme Christmas” by signing the petition right here. With already over 4,000 signatures, they are very close to reach 5,000!
