Invest4Justice was the first litigation crowdfunding platform to exist. It was created after spending over 1,000 hours attempting to tap traditional litigation financing that was available through private investors for a client with a USD 15 million claim against an Eastern European State. Although useful, since third-party funding enabled access to justice for strong cases, it quickly became apparent that funding was only available for very large cases (typically well over USD 20 million), it could take hundreds of hours to obtain, and it was simply not accessible for the vast majority of litigants. Late one night we talked about crowdfunding the case instead, but saw that no platforms existed for this. We decided to create the first one, while allowing litigants to offer contingent fees as rewards, and the alpha version opened in February 2014.
