My story of racial and disability discrimination
I am an African-British woman with mental health disabilities and I am currently suing my former employers for race and disability discrimination. The abuse was so bad that I even considered suicide. I was forced to leave the situation and was unemployed for ten months, but I have since found two other jobs, which helped me raise £40,000 to fund my lawsuit. It has been very difficult but I have stayed strong.
The company has hired expensive corporate lawyers and is lying, fabricating evidence and generally continuing to bully me, hoping that I will run out of money and back down. However, I have proof of these lies now and feel much stronger going into the hearing. The lawyer I was working with runs a small private practice and was visibly struggling to cope with the complications that my former employer’s are creating, and the skill of their legal team. She no longer works for me. I now need a Barrister to represent me. The company is a well-known Wall Street firm – some of its employees refused to sit in economy on flights to Africa. They actually once booked me in economy on the same flight as a white colleague who they booked in business. This same man referred to Africans as ‘peasants’ to my face. Of course they are now denying these things.
When this happened, I had only just started to get back on my feet financially after a nervous breakdown, which caused my disabilities and took all my savings to treat. As a result, I have no other resources besides my salary (or the ability to borrow), and need to find around £25,000 ($40,000) to fund the remainder of the case and the court hearing on 9 March.
