Welcome to the so-called land of the Free!
Last Sunday, the police responded to a noise complaint call. What was supposed to be a simple visit took a really dramatic and rather unnecessary turn. A video was released and published by the Alabama student newspaper Crimson White showing a police officer manhandling a student and another woman. The male student was roughly dragged out of his apartment when he allegedly “grabbed” the officer’s arm. Before that, he threatened to arrest him to then actually beat and tase the student. When other police officers showed up, they rushed the victims out, forced them to the ground, continued the beating and handcuffed them. A Video showing three different angles of the scene is available:

According to a study published by The Washington Post on May 30th, during the first five months of this year, the American police killed 385 people or to put it differently; more than 2 people per day. Right now, there’s a considerable raise of national concern but also anger around police violence and abuse of power and position, especially toward minorities. Many Black people has been shot dead or impetuously brutalized by White U.S. police officers. Also as mentioned in The Washington Post’s report, half of the victims were White and the other half was constituted of minorities. Amongst the unarmed victims, a third of them were Black or Hispanic. Out of the 385 victims killed by U.S. police at the beginning of this year, only 3 cases ended up in court where families pressed charges against the police officers responsible for causing the victims’ death. So far, already 840 Americans have been killed by the police this year.
Remember last June, 5th when a teenage girl (12 years-old) was brutally arrested by McKinney police (Texas) when attending a pool party.
